How Often Should You Replace Your Windows

February 8, 2022

Windows are an essential part of general house maintenance. Typically, durable and high-quality windows from any reputable window and door company can last for a long time. However, they cannot last forever, and there will come a point in time when replacement is inevitable. If windows are not replaced early enough, they can potentially affect you in so many ways, and they can cause severe damage to your property.

Typical Lifespan of a Window

Windows from different manufacturers have different lifespans. However, a quality window should last anywhere between 15 and 20 years, and this is the average lifespan mentioned by many manufacturers. Other manufacturers producing vinyl windows give a lifespan of between 20 and 25 years.

Other factors also come into play in determining how long a window can last. For instance, a well constructed and maintained window could easily last for more than 50 years. On the other hand, windows made from low-quality materials may not last for a decade.

Similarly, coastal cities like Charleston in South Carolina could have their windows aging faster than windows in cities like Los Angeles, CA. You should always look for any signs of problems if your windows are decades old.

Some Indications That Your Windows Need Replacement

Leaky Window and Condensation – A Warning Sign for Potential Mold Growth

The first indication that your windows need a replacement is their existing condition. The signs that will signal you of the replacement include the following:

  • Cracks on Window Panes or Frames – cracks, damage, broken or warped frames is a clear warning. Such damages could seriously affect the efficiency of insulation, heating, and air conditioning. These cracks can allow vermin and insect infestation. However, other types of minor cracks and damages may require only repairs as opposed to replacing.
  • Foggy Glass – A fogged glass is commonly witnessed in double-pane or triple-paned windows when they trap condensation between the panes, and this could be due to a small crack or opening that might not be visible. A fog-like appearance may indicate a leaking gas. Such leakages require the replacement of your windows.
  • Soft Frames – Excess moisture on wooden windows may cause the windowsills to rot, especially from the outside. If your wooden sills are not rigid but soft when you touch them, the entire exterior window may require immediate replacing. Replacement should be made even if there are no other visible defects. With such signs, the window may break down anytime.
  • Poor Operation– Opening and closing windows always would eventually create some tiny grooves and divots, and an extended period of these operations leads to cracks on the window frame. This type of wear and tear is another warning to replace your window especially if it often gets stuck.
  • Drafts – If you’ve done caulking and weatherstripping, but cold drafts are still coming into your house through openings other than the vents, then you need to consider replacing your window. A properly functioning window does not let in air.
  • Rising Energy Bills- If energy consumption in your house has increased significantly, the windows could be the probable cause. Replace single-pane and drafty windows with energy star certified windows, and you’ll save considerable amounts in energy bills.
