Are Argon-Filled Windows Worth It?

February 20, 2022

The use of argon gas in windows has been around for decades, but only recently have they become increasingly popular. But why? Are these argon-filled windows worth it? We’re going to dive into what exactly argon gas is, why it’s used in benefits, a few advantages and disadvantages, and answer the question – are they a good investment.

What is Argon gas?

Argon gas is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas often used in double-pane or triple-pane windows to improve energy efficiency and reduce condensation.

This abundant gas is non-toxic and makes up around 1% of the Earth’s atmosphere. As noted, it’s completely odorless and colorless, a lot like the oxygen we breathe; however, its properties make it useful in numerous everyday products – especially windows. We’ll cover that shortly.

Aside from windows, you’re breathing argon right now. It’s such a small amount, but it’s in the air. Additionally, the lightbulb in your room may contain argon. The welder that made things around your house most likely used it. It’s the most common noble gas on Earth.

Now that you’re well-versed in what argon is let’s get to whether or not argon-filled windows are worth it.

What is the purpose of argon gas in windows?

As we’ve mentioned, one of the most common household uses for argon is to fill the area inside windows. But why do we use argon instead of air or some other common gas or even air?

The Difference Between Double Pane and Single Pane Windows

The answer is that it insulates your home and is ultimately more energy efficient.

Think of it this way; it heats the glass when the sun shines on a window. That heat would then transfer inside your home; however, it must first go through the argon. Since argon is denser than air, it does a much better insulating.

Benefits of using argon in windows.

There’s a couple of benefits to having argon-filled windows throughout your home.

First, as noted, argon gas can help improve the insulation of your windows, leading to decreased energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint. This is the critical benefit most homeowners are after when determining whether or not they’re worth the additional costs.

Another benefit is that the gas can also help to reduce the amount of condensation that collects. That moisture can lead to less mold and mildew growth.

Moisture Inside Windows

Finally, one of the best things about this noble gas is that it’s incredibly versatile. You can use it in all shapes, sizes, and types of windows. Whether it’s a casement window or double hung window, as long as it’s a double or triple pane, it can be argon-filled.

Disadvantages of argon-filled windows.

As with anything, there are some disadvantages to these types of windows.

While one benefit is the gas density, this is also its demise. Because argon is denser than air, it doesn’t expand or contract with temperature changes; however, the windows will continue to grow and contract. This puts additional stress on the seals, which may cause them to leak. If the seals start leaking, you may see moisture buildup between the panes.

It’s imperative to keep an eye on your windows for cracks and fractures in the seals around the glass.

How to tell if your window seals need to be replaced or fixed.

If your windows are filling up with moisture or dirt between the glass, your window seals may be leaking.

This moisture buildup will usually happen during extreme temperature fluctuations or when the humidity is high. Just because there’s no moisture on the windows in the early afternoon doesn’t mean a seal isn’t broken. Be sure to pay attention at various times with varying temperatures and humidity levels.

This most likely won’t happen on all of your windows at once; however, if you see it on one window, be sure to check the rest of the windows.

Can argon gas be replaced in windows?

The surest way to determine if your windows need argon is to have a professional come out and test the windows. They’ll use a small tool that determines how much, if any, argon remains between the panes.

If your windows lost just a tiny amount of argon, it might be in your best interest to leave it be. Small amounts of argon may leak out of the window over time, and it doesn’t necessarily mean the seals are shot.

However, you can replace the gas, but it still won’t be a long-term fix. You may still notice a slow leak over time and require the argon to be replaced again. If that happens, your best option is to replace the window altogether – or get used to moisture buildup between the panes.

Tips for buying new windows that have argon gas.

When you’re in the market for new windows, be sure to ask if they have argon gas.

Not all windows do, so it’s important to inquire.

The best way to ensure your new windows have argon gas is to buy from a company specializing in energy-efficient products. They’ll usually have a wide range of windows that are argon-filled and can make custom windows of all shapes that are tailored for your home.

Another recommendation is to make sure you get the Low-E coating on the glass. This is not only more energy-efficient, but it’ll also prevent the glass from expanding and contracting, saving those seals.

So are these windows worth it?

These argon-filled windows are worth it and will return your investment in just a few years.

Sure, they’re more expensive; however, if you plan on living in your home for several years or you want to reduce the amount of energy that it takes to heat and cool your home – they are worth it!

If you live in an area where condensation is a major issue, this gas can help prevent it from occurring even during the coldest and hottest months.

So for the small additional costs of having argon-filled windows compared to air-filled windows, you’ll enjoy lower energy bills, a more comfortable home, and a beautiful view without condensation.

Homeowners can use argon gas in double-pane windows to improve energy efficiency and reduce condensation. It has been shown to provide significant improvements for climates with high humidity levels, such as south Texas.

Suppose you consider replacing your old single-pane window with a new one. In that case, we encourage you to consider argon-filled Windows because they will make a big difference in how comfortable your house feels throughout different seasons!
