What is an Awning Window and Why You’ll Love Them

April 13, 2022

Awning windows are a popular choice for many homeowners because they offer a stylish and functional way to let in the fresh air and natural light. If you’re thinking about installing an awning window in your home, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

We will discuss what awning windows are, some advantages and disadvantages, and some recommendations for maintaining these windows.

What is an awning window?

An awning window is a window that is designed to function in a particular way that separates it from other styles of windows. Whereas other windows might have hinges on the sides or bottom or none, awning windows have hinges at the top and open from the bottom. They look like an awning when they’re open.

This window style is ideally suited for walls that provide more width than height, but you still want the ability to open the window. The area above your bathtub is an area you might consider an awning window. There is plenty of space to place a window, but you might not have the height to put in a casement or single hung window due to the bathtub.

Some benefits of awning windows are worth considering.

First and foremost, these windows are great. They not only look great and have unique functionality, but they’ve some other benefits as well.

Do you enjoy opening your windows on a rainy day? Many people do. The sound and smell of the rain is a very calming sensation. Awning windows let you open your windows when it’s raining out without letting the rain into your home. It allows you have the best of both worlds.

Another great benefit is that they take up minimal space on your wall. If you don’t have the space for a standard 3′ by 5′ window, there’s a good chance you can fit an awning window in that tight space.

There are disadvantages to awning windows.

While we’re sure you’re going to love your new awning windows, you should be aware of some drawbacks.

The most significant disadvantage of this style is that it can inhibit egress in emergencies. Awning windows open in a way that makes crawling through them very difficult, unlike other types. This could be a significant consideration when putting these windows in children’s rooms.

Another disadvantage is that they’re harder to clean. Well, at least the outside is. Because they open outward and up, you have to go outside to clean the outside of the windows. Double-hung windows let you clean the outside of the window from inside your home, making them great for second-story windows.

How do you clean an awning window?

Just as we mentioned, this style is harder to clean. So how do you clean them? Well, the inside is relatively straightforward. With the window closed, clean the inside of the window. Ensure it is secure before you wash it, so it doesn’t pop open on you as you wipe it down.

For the exterior glass, you’ll have to go outside your home. I wish I had some tips or tricks on how to do this, but there are none. Because the window opens outward and upward, there is no way to reach the outside of the window from inside your home. So grab a ladder and your Windex and step outside to do this task.  You might want someone to assist by holding the ladder in place as you wash the windows.

Awning window maintenance.

A quick spray of lubricant keeps awning windows functioning smoothly and effortlessly.

Anytime you have moving pieces, there’s going to be maintenance involved. Awning windows are no exception.

In addition to cleaning these windows, you’re going to have to take care of the hinges and latches to make sure they stay in good condition.

With the open window, spray silicone lubricant on the hinges and latch. You can find this lubricant in just about any hardware store. This will ensure your windows open and close for years to come.

Be sure to wipe the excess lubricant as it will attract and hold dirt and could lead to a sticky window.

What to do with a sticky window?

This is a unique situation that awning windows typically face. Over time they may stick to the frame and become increasingly difficult to open and close. If you look closely, you can see the sides of the window rubbing the frame. Sometimes this is due to dirt and grime; other times, it just needs a minor adjustment.

With older wooden windows, note where the rub is and lightly plane the edge of the frame. You’ll need a wood planer to do this, and make sure it’s set on a shallow setting, so you don’t take too much material off at once. Remember, you want to make only minor adjustments.

You’ll have to adjust the hinges for newer windows made of laminate or vinyl as you can’t plane these frames. Check all of the hardware on the window to make sure all of the screws are secured. Years of opening and closing can loosen the screws, and tightening them up usually fixes the sticky window.
