Are Windows Covered Under Home Warranty?

August 30, 2023

If you’re a homeowner, especially one that just had new windows installed, you might be wondering if windows are covered under a home warranty. The short answer is no. Most home warranties do not generally cover them.

However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have coverage for your windows. There are many options; you have to know what includes windows and what doesn’t.

But before we get started, let’s discuss what a home warranty is and what they typically cover in their policies.

What is a home warranty?

You may have seen the advertisements, perhaps you’ve heard of them from a friend, maybe you received a one-year warranty when you purchased the home – regardless, home warranties are all the buzz. Sometimes, peace of mind is worth it, but that’s up to you.

Home warranties cover a range of areas throughout your home but generally, they cover appliances and systems found in most residences. Most plans cover items such as the refrigerator and air conditioner; however, you can add in other things for a premium as well. Do you own a pool? You can get the pump and filtration system covered as well.

So what about your windows? You might have just installed 10-20 windows throughout your home, and you want to protect your investment. That’s understandable, but I wouldn’t count on your home warranty to replace them.

Windows have their own warranty.

Most window manufacturers offer their own warranties. Keep in mind these warranties generally cover the product and labor from defect, but that’s not to say some companies don’t go above and beyond.

Let’s take a look at SunShield vinyl windows. They have one of the best warranties in the industry. Their Double Lifetime Warranty is covers parts, labor, and glass replacement for life. It’s all completely free and included when you purchase their windows. Taking it even a step further, their warranty is transferable to a new homeowner if you decide to sell your house. That’s is a fantastic selling point potential buyers may be interested in.

It’s worth noting that SunShield’s warranty is on select window systems that they offer. So, as with any contract, be sure to read it thoroughly and completely understand what is covered. Warranties vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, and some are transferrable, and some cover various aspects of the window.

Homeowners insurance vs. home warranty vs. window warranty.

At this point, we’ve talked about a couple of different types of warranties. Another topic that often gets thrown in is homeowners insurance. It’s essential, however, to understand the difference between these three things with regards to windows.

  • Window warranty. These are strictly for the windows. Sometimes they cover glass. Sometimes it is just parts and labor, and some even offer a total replacement. Be sure to inquire with the manufacturer as to what is covered.
  • Home warranty. These usually cover appliances and systems throughout your home, so windows are out of the question. Most home warranty policies don’t cover structural issues, and windows are considered part of the structure.
  • Homeowners insurance. This may or may not cover your windows, but it boils down to how the window is broken. If the window is damaged or destroyed due to severe weather or other natural phenomena, it may cover the repair costs. However, if a baseball makes its way through a window, then you’re most likely on your own for that repair.

Knowing what coverage you have and what policies cover various damages will go a long way in protecting your investment.

What is covered by a home warranty?

We’ve talked about windows and home warranties, but what are some of the other things that are generally covered by a home warranty? If windows aren’t usually covered, then what is?

Here are some of the more common items covered by home warranty policies:

This, of course, is not all-inclusive. It would be impossible to list every variation of every policy, so be sure to ask the home warranty company what is covered. They might have different plans that offer different levels of coverage deductibles and have other terms.

Read the fine print!

Whether you’re digging through a home warranty, window warranty, or even homeowners insurance policy, be sure to read the fine print. These companies exist to turn a profit, so they try to limit the abuse of their warranties by explicitly spelling out what is covered and what is not. Don’t just take the sales representative’s word for it. Get all of your coverage in writing.

It might seem tedious, and you may think that nobody reads those terms and conditions, but if you want a complete understanding of what you’re getting, you should read it before your purchase a policy.

Another great source of information is the reviews on the home warranty company. How do they serve other homeowners? Are their claims processed quickly, or do they look for ways to avoid paying out claims on technicalities? A quick search for reviews will help out tremendously. These reviews might be on Google, BBB, or any other platform, but be sure to get a complete look at the company.

Windows are not typically covered under your home warranty, though this may vary depending on the company. Another policy, such as homeowners insurance or manufacturer warranty, may cover various forms of damage.

Homeowners should read the warranty carefully and understand what is and isn’t covered before making a purchase. It’s important to know what your coverage entails to protect your investment in case of damage.
