Top 5 Considerations When Buying Windows

July 12, 2023

Windows are a significant decision for homeowners. They can make or break the look of your home and how comfortable it is to live in. With so many different types on the market, you could easily get lost when figuring out which window is best for you.

There are so many different variables to consider when making the purchase you will want to make sure you understand what you’re getting and how it’ll affect your home.

Don’t worry; however, that’s why we’re here to help. From our vast experience, here are the top 5 considerations when choosing the right windows for your home.

Style of the Window.

The first thing you’ll need to consider when buying windows for your home is the style of the windows.

Why is this the first?

Because the style will dictate the other considerations as well; for example, if you have a small opening and you want to go with a larger picture window, that will increase the overall cost to install. That picture window is going to be a bit more expensive than the single-hung window you would’ve otherwise installed in that spot.

Take an inventory of the windows throughout your home and decide what style you would like to use to replace them.

When making your decision, keep in mind that some windows work better with double-hung windows while others won’t allow for a good view from the inside or out if using a casement or awning window.

Take measurements of each opening and consult a professional before making your final decision.

Material of the framing.

What material do you want your framing made of?

There are several to choose from, such as wood, vinyl, fiberglass, and aluminum – each with its advantages and disadvantages.

The most common material for framing in residential applications is vinyl, followed by aluminum. These are both excellent choices as they look great, last a long time, you can get them in just about any color and texture, and they’re not too expensive.

If you want to compare the two frame materials, we did an article comparing vinyl to aluminum. Check it out as we break down all the details to help you decide.

Energy efficiency.

This is a big one when choosing the right windows for your home. It might be why you’re considering buying new windows for your home in the first place.

Well, if that’s the case, then you’re in luck because there are several different types of windows on the market today that will help keep your home comfortable while keeping your bills down.

You can choose a double or triple pane window filled with argon or krypton. These windows use the noble gasses as an insulator to better regulate the temperature throughout your home.

Low-E glazing also help keep IR energy outside of your home. These have a reflective coating on the outside of the window that reflects the sun’s rays away. Low-E stands for “low emissivity.”

While these windows have their problems, they’re generally the most energy-efficient windows you can buy.

Sure, with energy-efficient windows, you’ll pay more upfront. These windows can cost 30-50% more than other windows, but you’ll see savings on your energy bill. Over time, the difference may pay for the windows.

Your budget and the cost of windows.

As with anything in life, your budget will be a driving factor in your decision. Of course, installing windows throughout your home is a huge decision. It can cost upwards of $20,000, depending on the size of your home.

Side note: when you see your home outfitted with new windows and take a look at your utility bill, you’ll soon realize the steep cost is entirely worth it.

There are ways to save money on windows, even if you have a tight budget. Take a thorough look at the material of the frame as some materials are less expensive. You can also pass on some more energy-efficient upgrades such as triple pane or Low-E coatings. Foregoing these options will lower the cost substantially.

However, if you just have to have beautiful, energy-efficient windows in your home, there’s always financing. Many window installers partner with financing providers to offer their customers some options. Sure, you’ll have a monthly payment, but you’ll also have some fantastic windows to grace your home.

Do the windows come with a warranty?

If the manufacturer or installer offers a warranty for the windows, it should be an indicator. If they have a lifetime warranty, the windows are probably top-notch quality. It means they’re standing behind the quality.

Be sure to read the fine print, however. Make certain the lifetime warranty is, in fact, a lifetime warranty and doesn’t just cover a few years after installation. We’ve seen that before.

Something else to ask about warranties is if the contract is transferrable. If and when you sell your home, can you transfer the warranty to the new homeowner? This could be a significant selling point for potential homebuyers.
